A Stallion Ad that Doesn’t Suck

Okay, I am a career Graphic and Web Designer so I'm a little overly sensitive to bad design. A lot of the Stallion advertisements out there make me cringe. They are generally made up of bad photoshop jobs, illegible fonts and photographs with tacky bevel filters or faded edges. You won't see any of that nonsense here.

This Might Not be the Best Photo to Advertise your Stud with

I came across this photo while looking at a local boarding facility's website on their stallion page. This stallion, Gonzo's Jazzy Decor, is a perfectly nice horse I'm sure. This photo just isn't the best choice for promoting him. Unless, they were thinking "Hey, look how good our boy is, he'll put up with anything, even awful jumping form."

So yesterday I gave an overview of the base colors, Black and Red. After reading that, you might be wondering why there aren't more pure black horses running around, seeing as black is dominant to chestnut. The answer is Agouti, the modifying gene that causes a black horse to be appear bay.

This is the first in a series of entries on the rainbow of horse coat colors. Behind every flashy paint, every appaloosa spotted pony and every dunalino, is a base coat of either Red or Black. From these bases of red (chestnut) and black, modifying genes are layered to create these fancier colors. Once you understand how the base colors work you can figure out the more complex genetics that cause the rarer coat colors.

The pet photography by Jeff Ross is some of the most creative and whimsical pet portraits I have ever seen. He poses Chinese Shar peis in a dermatologist's office, a group of Chihuahuas playing macarenas, and costumed pups trick or treating. Read on for a sampling of some of the most original pet photography I guarantee you have ever seen. Just imagine what he could do if a horse owner hired him!

Horses Aren’t Supposed to Look Like Beef Cows

No, this is not a 'shopped* photo. This is an actual horse, who is actually this beefy. Meet Kids Classic Style. "Bucky" is an 1800 pound, 16 hand American Quarter Horse. He is also HYPP N/H. This means, he carries the gene for a disease that will one day cause him to become paralyzed without notice. And oh yeah, this gene also makes him overly muscular.

Vogue’s New Line of Horse Hats

No, Vogue isn't actually launching a line of horse hats, I just thought this photo was funny. Equestrian inspired clothing seems to be in style. Hmm... does this mean I can get away with wearing my riding pants out in public? I've always felt uncomfortable going to the store when I've just left the barn wearing jodhpurs.
